Stainless steel lounge chairs by François Monnet for Kappa, France 1970

These François Monnet chairs were sourced after years in storage, where the stainless steel had developed an irregular and disrupted surface.
The original brushed finish had been disturbed by scratches running against the grain, affecting both the visual coherence and the material expression.
The restoration focused on re-establishing the surface. Each element was carefully sanded and reworked by hand, gradually rebuilding the correct brushing direction and refining the structure to its intended consistency.
Using fine brushing techniques, the steel was brought back to a balanced and uniform finish, aligned with the original character of the design.
The chairs were completed with new upholstery in dark brown nubuck, introducing a soft, tactile contrast to the precise and reflective quality of the steel.
