Pierre Chapo ‘B17 Longue’ Bookshelf, France 1967

The rare B17 Longue bookshelf by Pierre Chapo (1927 - 1986), designed in France in 1967, is a standout piece. The 'Longue' in its name indicates that this is the longest version Chapo created, which notably enhances the design's impact. It is crafted from solid Elm, featuring a beautifully exposed grain that gives it a rich, warm, and natural look.
The B17 Longue bookshelf's design is marked by discrete yet strong clean lines that vary in distance, along with block shapes that contribute to its impressive architectural appearance. A signature feature of this design is the turned shelf supports. Unlike typical designs where the support is mounted under the shelf, Chapo innovated a construction that allows the support to hang in the wall parts. It can be clamped with the aid of an interlocking solid block, securing the shelves under the supports. This unique setup is not only visually striking but also functional, creating a beautiful separation that can double as bookends. This piece is a beautiful and balanced study in gravity, in excellent original condition, and displays a warm patina.
