Nerone & Patuzzi side table for Gruppo NP2, Italy 1960s

Sculptural side table by Nerone & Patuzzi for Gruppo NP2, Italy, ca. 1968. Unique piece made on special commission. The table features a sculptural wooden base with strong geometric forms, finished with lead and rubber elements, amd carries a round glass top. These elements and shapes interact harmoniously, creating an intriguing yet balanced architectural object. The wood has an impeccable patina and depth; Nerone applied his distinctive technique, which he used in his early works. He enhanced the wood’s character by exposing it to a flame, polishing and darkening it through friction, and then rubbing in multiple layers of colored wax. Gruppo NP2 was founded in 1962 by Nerone Ceccarelli and Giancarlo Patuzzi. Nerone, the creator of the pieces, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and Florence and moved to Turin in 1957. Research into geometric shapes was the main theme in his works; rigorous geometric abstractionism can be found throughout his oeuvre, always striving to integrate art and architecture. Signed by hand: NP2 Torino, Nerone - Patuzzi. The work remains in excellent condition.
