Large wooden stool of the Dogon tribe

Large wooden stool of the Dogon tribe, Mali. Original wooden stool of the Dogon tribe, Mali beginning of the 20th century. Beautiful shape carved out of a solid piece of tropical wood with a nice subtle decorative engraving on the seat. The post is nicely carved and the carving marks are still visible. Stools like this with a middle post and seat are quite rare, most have four legs or a decorative base. The seat in stools like this represents heaven and the post represents a tree; linking heaven to the base which represents the earth, regarding the Dogon mythology. Beautiful characteristic patina.
