Abstract bronze sculpture by André Willequet, Belgium 1970s

Abstract bronze sculpture by André Willequet (1921 - 1998), Belgium 1970s. Willequet was trained by sculptor Oscar Jespers at the 'École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture et des Arts Décoratifs ' in Brussels between 1940 - 1945. He won the second 'Prix de Rome', due to this price he was able to travel to France where he met Brancusi, Laurens and Zadkine from whom he learns lessons of humanism, humility and perseverance. In the early years Willequet worked more figurative but over the time his style involved into abstract, nevertheless he always found inspiration in the human body and in nature. Work of Willequet is among the collection of several important museums and sculpture gardens. This particular sculpture is made in bronze and shows an abstract figure, a balanced play of mass and emptiness can be seen which evokes a certain calm movement empowered by the gentle fluttering lines. Reminiscent of the Japanese 'Ma movement' where the 'emptiness' plays a very important role. Very interesting and powerful sculpture, strong yet elegant due to the contrast between the organic forms versus the straight lines and the soft shapes versus the rough texture. Signed at the lower corner with his monogram: AW. In excellent original condition.
