Unique artist tapestry by Émile Gilioli – "Noir, rouge et blanc", woven by Ewald Kröner, ca. 1970. An intriguing and rare abstract artwork, executed in a tufted woven wool tapestry in a minimal, cubistic style. The tapestry stands out not only for its strong visual presence but also for its distinctive scale. The sharp, geometric composition is accentuated by the powerful contrast of black, red, and white – lending the work a dynamic intensity. The tapestry was woven by Ewald Kröner, renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship and for translating modernist works into textile form. Kröner was often commissioned to create one-off pieces and collaborated with significant artists of the 20th century, including Pablo Picasso, Victor Vasarely, Hans Arp, and Joan Miró. His work is known for its precision and deep understanding of the original artist’s visual language. Émile Gilioli studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the 1930s, he returned to Paris after World War II and became part of the avant-garde abstraction movement. He was associated with the 'Nouvelle École de Paris', alongside artists such as Serge Poliakoff, Jean Deyrolle, Jean Dewasne, and Victor Vasarely. Gilioli holds an important place in post-war art history, with works in the permanent collections of institutions including MoMA in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Musée National d'Art Moderne, and the Middelheim Open-Air Sculpture Museum in Antwerp. The tapestry is in an excellent and fresh condition.
