Large abstract wooden wall relief by Nerone & Patuzzi for Gruppo NP2, Italy ca. 1968. Unique early sculptural wooden relief showing a variety of carved constructivist and organic shapes arranged into a harmonious and intriguing composition. Observing the panel, the main textured circles catch the eye at first sight; continuing the observation, the smaller shapes, refined carvings, and different levels come into view. The wood shows an impeccable patina and depth. Nerone used a special technique to bring the wood to life: the wood was polished and darkened through friction during the labor process, and then intensively rubbed in with multiple layers of colored wax. This method resulted in a typical deep and rich finish with various gradients and color tones. Gruppo NP2 was founded in 1962 by Nerone Ceccarelli & Giancarlo Patuzzi. Nerone was the creator of the artworks; he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and Florence and moved to Turin in 1957. Research into geometric shapes was the main theme in his works; rigorous geometric abstractionism can be found throughout his oeuvre, always striving to integrate art and architecture.
