Ceramic side table ‘Ellipse’ by Roger Capron, France 1960s
Ceramic coffee table mod. 'Ellipse' by Roger Capron, France 1960s. This model was given the name 'Galilée' but is also often called 'Graphisme' or 'Ellipse' due to the beautiful ellipse pattern. Capron was proponent of the Forme Libres Movement, characterised by undulating expressionist lines, shapes and and patterns. We can see this clearly back in this work. The variating repeating pattern in a nice minimal grey, black and white color scheme creates an interesting optical effect, which reminds of the work of great optical artist Victor Vaserely. Besides the color scheme the tiles variates in a matt and shiny finish which subtly highlights the optical effect. The table has the nice thick blackened solid steel base with the characteristic finger joint connection at the corners. Signed: R. Capron. In excellent original condition.
