Ceramic side table ‘Ellipse’ by Roger Capron, France 1960s

Ceramic coffee table model 'Ellipse' by Roger Capron, France, 1960s. This model, named 'Galilée', is also commonly referred to as 'Graphisme' or 'Ellipse', owing to its striking ellipse pattern. Capron was a proponent of the Forme Libres Movement, characterized by undulating expressionist lines, shapes, and patterns, which are clearly reflected in this piece. The table's varying repeating pattern, set in a minimalistic grey, black, and white color scheme, creates an intriguing optical effect reminiscent of the work of the renowned optical artist Victor Vasarely. Additionally, the tiles vary between matte and shiny finishes, subtly enhancing the optical illusion. The table features a robust, blackened solid steel base with characteristic finger joint connections at the corners. It is signed by R. Capron and remains in excellent original condition.
