Ceramic sculpture by Salvatore Meli, Italy 1963
Important sculpture by Salvatore Meli (Comiso 1929 - Rome 2011), Italy 1963. Meli studied at the Academia di Belle Arte in Florence and became a significant figure in the Italian post war art movement. Meli's work stands in-between the poles of painting and sculpture. This particular piece stands out in scale and its unusual organic shape, graphical painting and texture. An abstract tropical bird can be recognized in the sculpture, the elegant dynamic shape of a bird inspired Meli and can be found in many of his works. The sculpture is shaped out of terracotta finished with a matte and glossy glaze. Signed: Meli Roma '63. Three refined pins mounted on a heavy steel base carry the sculpture, a custom made steel pedestal is added to serve as a nice display. In excellent condition.
