Ceramic sculpture by Salvatore Meli, Italy 1963

An important sculpture by Salvatore Meli (Comiso, 1929 - Rome, 2011), Italy, 1963. Having studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, Meli became a prominent figure in the Italian post-war art movement. His oeuvre uniquely straddles the realms of painting and sculpture. This particular piece is notable for its scale, unusual organic shape, graphical painting, and texture. It abstractly represents a tropical bird, a motif that inspired Meli and recurs throughout his work, capturing the elegant and dynamic shape of a bird. The sculpture is crafted from terracotta and finished with both matte and glossy glazes. It is signed: Meli Roma '63. Supported by three refined pins mounted on a heavy steel base, the sculpture includes a custom-made steel pedestal for optimal display. It is in excellent condition.
