Ceramic wall relief by Salvatore Meli, Italy 1965
Sculptural ceramic wall relief 'Corpo Sdraiato' by Salvatore Meli (Comiso 1929 - Rome 2011), Italy 1965. Meli studied at the Academia di Belle Arte in Florence and became a significant figure in the Italian post war art movement. Meli's work stands in-between the poles of painting and sculpture. A panel in ceramic is quite unusual in the oeuvre of Meli who created more sculptural vases but actually brings back two of his passions in this artwork; ceramic and painting. The work is born with the idea of - and created as a painting but in a different material, ceramic, which gave the possibility to create something with this expression and relief. Signed at the right bottom: Meli 65. The original paper label is attached at the backside of the panel. In excellent condition.
