Set of four ‘Superleggera’ chairs by Gio Ponti for Cassina, Italy 1950s
Set of four 'Superleggera' chairs by Gio Ponti for Cassina, Italy 1950s. Iconic design made in solid Ash and their original black lacquered finish and upholstered seat. The seat is reupholstered in a warm honey colored mohair velvet. Characteristic of the design are the sharp lines which are typical for the work of Gio Ponti. The chairs are named 'Superleggera' after their weight, which means very light. It took Ponti many years in paring down the triangular section in order to get them as light and strong as possible. The result is amazing, so light and yet so strong and comfortable. Early set marked with the Cassina sticker. In very good condition with a lovely aging on the frames.
