Set of large Wooden Japanese Kokeshi Dolls, Japan 1950s
Exceptional set of Large dark wooden 'Kokeshi' こけし, 小芥子 dolls, Japan 1950s. These specific kind of dolls are being crafted over 150 years as a toy for children, originally from the northeastern region (Tōhoku-chihō) of Japan.
The dolls are made of Japanese Maple wood all crafted by hand with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. These specific group is very minimal decorated and has a nice warm dark finish, some red color has faded away over the years, this patina gives them a very nice unique character. The dolls are signed at the bottom, this was done by kokeshi makers since the 1950s. In a beautiful original condition with a stunning patina.
